Who covers the heaven with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth,
who makes grass to grow upon the mountains.
Psalm 147:8
Job 26, begins six chapters of Job's proclamation of the mysteries and power of God. These passages have been referred to as "a poem of trust". Verse 14 says, "Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, and how small a whisper we hear of Him!" We are only given a glimpse of God as we stand in awe of that which He has created and sustains. Job calls attention to the fact that "He hangs the earth on nothing. He binds up the water in His thick clouds, Yet the clouds are not broken under it. He covers the face of His throne, and spreads His cloud over it." Job speaks of "a circular horizon", "the boundary of light and darkness", "the pillars of heaven". Verse12-13, "He stirs up the sea with His power, and by His understanding He breaks up the storm. By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent" (we are only privy to "the mere edge" of what happened in the Garden of Eden).
This Creator God and the hope we have in Him is the subject of today's reading in Psalm 96:11-13. "Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; Let the sea roar, and all its fullness; let the field be joyful, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice before the Lord. For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth". We are told in Romans 8:22, "For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now". How we should long for Jesus to return! "He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with His truth" (Psalm 96:13). The Book of Proverbs 23:10-12, reminds us of God's love for the fatherless. "Do not remove the ancient landmark, nor enter the fields of the fatherless; for their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you. Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge".
And, in Romans 15:25-33, "Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me. ." Until Christ returns, we live in a fallen world and are all very much in need of God's help. Like Paul, there are believers today who need to be delivered, those who need God's blessings on their service. We need joy and to be refreshed. We need the God of peace to be with us all!
When I see thick clouds, do I think about the fact that these are God's clouds. When I see scenes of a raging sea, will I remember that "He stirs up the sea with His power"? When I see the stars, the sun and the moon, do I remember that "By His Spirit He adorned the heavens"? And, when I see the world in turmoil, do I remember that "He is coming, He is coming!"? We are instructed by Jesus Himself to pray, "Thy kingdom come"! Whenever we truly immerse ourselves in the beauty and power of God and the hope we have in Him--our hearts cry out for His return! "Even so, come, Lord Jesus" (Revelation 22:20)!
